History

The Pipkin House is considered to be the second oldest house in Gates County. The home sits on one of the original land grants of John Pipkin and wife Martha. John was originally an indentured servant in the late 1600’s.  The house was built somewhere between 1750 and 1760 as a wedding present for his son Isaac, who married Charity Goodman in 1756. The Pipkins owned a trading post which was on the route between Suffolk and Edenton and the stage coach route to New Bern and Wilmington.  The Pipkins also were known for a Tavern/Inn where General Lafayette was entertained.

In 1807 the house was enlarged and by the 1840’s the home had taken on a Greek revival style. The farm has been inherited through many generations, added onto, and kept in the family as rental property until the 1960’s.

Bundy and Marinda Lane purchased the farm from the descendants of the Pipkin family in 2015 and months later were able to purchase the home and put it back with the farm. Bundy now farms the 120 acres of land.  From new paint to refinished historic floors, upgraded kitchen and furnishings, we have enjoyed learning the history about this home and getting it ready for you to stay and enjoy.  If you like to learn more about the property, visit  pipkinusa.org

The Pipkin farm is protected by historic covenants for many more generations to enjoy this little piece of history in Gates County.
